ESD standards get the attention in electronics facilities, but there's another set of rules your floor has to answer to: OSHA's. They're less glamorous and just as enforceable, and they cover the things that injure people — slips, trips, and the hazards a degrading floor creates. Here's what applies, in plain terms.

The short version: OSHA's walking-working-surfaces rules (29 CFR 1910 Subpart D) require floors to be clean, orderly, in good repair, and free of recognized hazards, with slip, trip, and fall risks controlled. For electronics facilities, those safety requirements run alongside — not instead of — ESD requirements. The floor has to satisfy both.

OSHA's general industry standard for walking-working surfaces (29 CFR 1910.22) sets baseline expectations that apply to virtually every facility floor:

  • Surfaces kept clean, orderly, and sanitary.
  • Floors maintained in good repair — free of the hazards a cracked, spalling, or failing floor creates.
