A floor coating or overlay is only as good as the day it goes down. At DTI Industrial Flooring, we've seen more projects run long because of a cluttered work area or an unexpected forklift route than because of anything to do with the resin itself. The good news: nearly every one of those delays is preventable. This pre-installation checklist walks you through everything your Tracy, CA or Central Valley facility should have squared away before our crew rolls up — so the install starts on time, cures clean, and gets your floor back into service as fast as physics allows.
Use it as a working document. Print it, assign an owner to each section, and walk the space with our estimator during the site visit. The goal is simple: no surprises on day one.
1. Scheduling and Downtime Planning
Every industrial floor project is really a logistics project. Coatings and overlays need continuous access to the slab and a window where nobody drives, drags, or parks anything on the fresh material. Nail down the calendar first and the rest gets easier.
- ✅ Confirm the total downtime window, including surface prep, application, and full cure — not just application day. A fast-cure system may return to foot traffic overnight; heavier vehicle traffic often needs longer.
- ✅ Identify your least-disruptive window — a weekend, a planned shutdown, a slow season, or a graveyard-shift block.
- ✅ Sequence multi-bay areas so production can keep moving in one zone while we work another.
- ✅ Build in weather buffer days, especially for exterior dock aprons or areas open to the elements.
- ✅ Notify shipping/receiving so inbound trucks aren't scheduled to cross wet coating.

2. Area Clearance
We can't coat what we can't reach. Clearing the space fully before the crew arrives is the single biggest driver of an on-schedule install.
- ✅ Remove all racking, pallets, and stored product from the work area and a working perimeter around it.
- ✅ Relocate movable equipment, carts, and tooling to a staging zone.
- ✅ Detach or lift anchored fixtures where the floor coating needs to run underneath.
- ✅ Clear floor drains, trench covers, and pits so edges and terminations can be detailed properly.
- ✅ Confirm forklift and pallet-jack parking outside the exclusion zone.
- ✅ Empty and clean the slab of loose debris, standing water, and spilled product.
3. Environmental Conditions (Temperature and Humidity)
Resinous floors are chemistry. Temperature and humidity directly affect how the material flows, wets out, and cures. In the Central Valley, summer heat and winter fog both matter, and dew point is the number that trips up most facilities.

- ✅ Confirm HVAC or temporary heat/cooling can hold the space in range during application and cure.
- ✅ Plan to keep bay doors closed during and after application to stabilize conditions.
- ✅ Flag dusty or high-airflow areas — fans and open doors can pull contaminants onto a wet film.
4. Slab Condition and Moisture
Moisture vapor coming up through concrete is the number-one cause of coating failure — delamination, bubbling, and peeling months down the road. We test for it, but knowing your slab's history up front saves everyone time.
- ✅ Share the slab's age. New concrete generally needs about 28 days to cure before coating.
- ✅ Note any vapor barrier beneath the slab, if known.
- ✅ Point out cracks, spalls, joints, and previous patches so we can plan repairs.
- ✅ Identify prior coatings, sealers, or curing compounds that must be removed or profiled.
- ✅ Allow time for moisture testing — calcium chloride (≤ 3 lbs/1,000 sq ft/24 hrs) or in-situ RH probes (≤ 75%).
- ✅ Flag areas of known standing water or leaks around drains and wash-down zones.
If testing reveals high vapor emission, a moisture-mitigation primer can be built into the scope. Where the substrate is worn or uneven, a floor repair and overlay step restores a sound, flat base before the finish coat goes down. It's always cheaper to address this before installation than to chase a failure afterward.
5. Utilities and Access
Surface prep equipment — grinders, shot blasters, dust collection — needs real power and clear paths. Confirm the practical stuff early.
- ✅ Confirm power availability, including any 208V/240V three-phase needs for larger prep equipment.
- ✅ Verify a water source for cleanup and, where used, wet grinding.
- ✅ Establish a materials staging area near the entry, out of the traffic path.
- ✅ Confirm dock or door dimensions for equipment delivery.
- ✅ Provide gate codes, badges, and after-hours access for the crew and a facility contact on call.
- ✅ Identify a dumpster or waste plan for spent abrasives and packaging.
6. Safety and Compliance
An industrial floor install shares the building with your people and your operation. Aligning on safety before day one keeps everyone protected and keeps the schedule intact.
- ✅ Exchange safety contacts and review your site-specific rules and sign-in process.
- ✅ Confirm PPE and site orientation requirements for outside contractors.
- ✅ Plan ventilation for solvent or high-VOC products, or select low-odor systems for occupied buildings.
- ✅ Barricade and sign the work zone to keep foot and forklift traffic clear.
- ✅ Review fire and hot-work considerations if grinding or torching near sprinkler heads.
- ✅ Coordinate lockout/tagout for any equipment powered down in the work area.
Facilities with strict sanitation requirements — like those in food and beverage — often layer in wash-down and antimicrobial finish specs. Flag those requirements now so the right system is specified from the start.
7. Communication Plan
Most day-of friction comes down to someone not getting the memo. A one-page communication plan solves it.
- ✅ Name a single point of contact on your side with authority to make quick decisions.
- ✅ Notify all shifts, including night and weekend crews, about the closed area and dates.
- ✅ Post clear signage at every entrance to the work zone.
- ✅ Alert neighboring tenants if odor or noise could carry.
- ✅ Share the return-to-service schedule so operations can plan the restart.
- ✅ Agree on a change-order process in case hidden slab conditions turn up during prep.
8. Day-Of Checklist
The final walk before the crew starts. Run through this the morning of — or the night before — installation.
- Work area fully cleared, swept, and free of standing water.
- Temperature and humidity confirmed within range; HVAC or temporary climate control running.
- Bay doors and windows managed for stable conditions.
- Power, water, and staging area confirmed and accessible.
- Exclusion zone barricaded and signed; traffic rerouted.
- Facility contact on site or reachable by phone.
- All shifts and neighbors notified of the closure.
- Return-to-service timeline posted and understood.

A Central Valley manufacturer we worked with was skeptical that prep was worth the fuss.
